In 1845 Bukovina (or Bucovina or Bukoviana or Bukoviania) was part of the Kingdom of Galicia which in turn was in the fold of the Austria-Hungarian Empire.
Bucovina was a small land area populated by Ruthenians (Ukrainians), Germans, Austrians, Russians, Romanians, Moldavians and a few more. It was fought over and passed over by many nations as the centuries passed.
In the 21st century the area is divided between Ukraine and Romania.
Noted events in his life were:
• He immigrated in 1912. Departed Antwerp, Belgium on a ship called The Montreal which landed at St. John New Brunswick on March 6, 1912.
He cleared medical and immigration and left St. John on a train on March 21st arriving in Winnipeg on March 27th.
Sons Mike and Wasyl met him in Oyen (the children had immigrated to North Dakota in 1905) and they filed on four homesteads at Oyen (Mike, John, Wasyl and Elie). All of the family returned to North Dakota for the winter and then moved everything north in the Spring.
